Winter Open Day at Old Ford Lock
Saturday 10 November, 2018 @ 10:00 am - 4:00 pmfree
Canal & River Trust are inviting everyone to their winter Open Day at Old Ford Lock where visitors can watch how old gates are repaired and find out about the history of our canals.
The open day is a part of the six-month-long programme of repairs to England and Wales’ waterways.
Old Ford Lock is situated on the Regent’s Canal and marks the start of the Hackney Cut, an artificial channel built in the 18th century to cut off a large loop in the natural channel.
For ten years, the neighbouring old Lock-keeper’s cottages were used for television filming of The Big Breakfast, Channel 4’s early morning show. The three cottages, which were converted into a single house for the show, have since been compulsorily purchased as part of the Olympic Stadium development plans for the 2012 Summer Olympics. As of 2017, the cottages have remained intact despite their 200-metre proximity to the stadium.
The event is perfect for heritage enthusiasts and families who would like to find out about the history, structure and the diverse cultures that are embedded into the hearts of these waterways.
Visitors will be able to find out more about the 1500 locks on the UK canals, each of them being different and made to measure at the Bradley Workshop in the West Midlands, as well as the process of creating new gates. Visitors will also be able to watch repairs of the old gates in action, learn about the history of these gates and ask questions afterwards.
The event is free, just wrap yourself in warm clothes and turn up on the day.
