Suffragette kitchen and herb garden launch
Saturday 14 July, 2018 @ 1:00 pm - 4:00 pm
Join the launch of the Suffragette Kitchen Garden for a day of gardening activities and suffragette story telling, all supplied with food and drink donated by businesses from the Roman Road.
The launch will be the first of a series of events to plant a community herb garden, on the historic site of the Suffragette soup kitchen, on the edge of the Ranwell West Estate, just off the Old Ford Road.
During the event, there will be a garden design workshops where we want to know which herbs you like to cook with and what you be interested in planting within the garden. Also look out for games for children, recipe swaps and kitchen drawing workshops.
The garden is designed to celebrate the important work of the East London Federation of the Suffragettes (ELFS), which focused on the rights of the working women in the east end. As well as fighting for the vote, the ELFS led community action to provide: a children’s health clinic, employment as part of a cooperative toy factory and affordable food through a series of soup kitchens for the women of the East End.
This garden will form part of Edible Bow, a network of community food growing gardens within local estates. These gardens are planted and cared for through a series of community events, which produce a yield for local residents.
You can find the herb garden at Daling Way, London E3 5NN.
