We want to hear from you. In support of the London Voices Journalism Competition, any entries that are based on local stories may also be able to be published on our website.
We are a social enterprise trying to give a voice and a platform to our local community. We want to find young local journalists and strengthen the skills within our community. We want you to tell us about the issues that affect your daily lives.
Last year, Greenwich resident Louisa Naks was interested to see how the Brexit referendum was affecting European immigrants. She interviewed four diverse individuals and wrote about their hopes and concerns for the London Voices Journalism Competition. Since then, she has gone onto study journalism, been interviewed on London Live TV, and her concerns have been echoed across media channels nationally.
The London Voices competition is now looking for this year’s emerging journalism stars. Anyone living, working or studying in London and has a story to tell, a cause to promote or a new angle on an existing story has the chance to enter. Using written, audio or video stories, entrants need no previous experience – just an enthusiasm for telling a story.
Many key national stories start with local voices. Those impacted by Brexit. Those only eating with the help of food banks. The Windrush children. Students suffering from high fees. Those working on zero hours contracts. All of these stories began with individuals raising their voices and sharing their stories.
As a diverse city, London needs more stories and reporters that reflect this. The London Voices competition challenges anyone who has ever wanted to tell a story but didn’t know how to get involved.
With support from a range of universities, media organisations and news websites, there are some great prizes on offer, including time on location with professional journalists, a day in a newsroom and mentoring from those working in the field.
Send entries to firstname.lastname@example.org with London Voices Journalism Competition in the subject line, or just CC us in your entry, and if the story fits our website, we can publish it too! To enter the competition, click here. The deadline is 21st May 2018.
