Christmas is all about the children so we’ve lined up a programme of imaginative festive kids’ events and workshops that they’ll never forget. They’ll be elbow deep in glitter, biscuit decoration, epic Christmas games, record-breaking garland-making and silly fancy dress. And of course, Santa is coming to town. Amazingly it’s all FREE.
1. Santa’s Grotto on Roman Road
Santa is coming to Roman Road and bringing toys for all the children. Head down to Bonnieboo Baby at 543 Roman Road from midday onwards on Saturday and Sunday. There’ll be a photographer there too to take professional photographs of Father Christmas and your child.
2. Letter to Santa workshop
The wonderful people from Letter Lounge will be setting up at Roman Road Winter Festival and helping children write their letters to Santa. The grown-ups can keep busy too – there will be a corner dedicated to the art of making Christmas cards, so come along and learn a trick or two from the letter writing expert herself, Claire Medcalf.
3. Christmas Decoration workshop
Help make the tree decorations for Roman Road’s big Christmas tree on Gladstone Place. This children’s workshop takes place at the Idea Store Bow on Saturday 6th December. Drop-in between 10am-4pm to make and then hang your own creation on the tree.
The Idea Store Bow will also be running Christmas decorating workshops in the run-up to the festival. There will be drop-in sessions on Saturday and Sunday 29th & 30th November (check times in store) and also Monday 1st December to Friday 5th December from 4-6pm each day. Bring in thin carrier bags (colourful ones would be nice) and your unwanted CDs or DVDs to turn into decorations.
4. Biscuit decoration workshop
Roll up your sleeves and get stuck in. G. Kelly pie and mash shop will be hosting a biscuit decoration workshop on Saturday 6th December at 3pm. Biscuits and decorating materials will be provided, just drop-in, decorate and eat your creations.
5. Old fashioned board game bonanza
Buckaroo, Operation, Twister, Jenga, Connect 4…there will be every children’s game imaginable at the Roman Road Adventure Playground. Drop by on Saturday 5th December for some serious gaming action. There’ll also be a competition to make the longest giant paper chain to be hung in shops up and down the Roman. All materials supplied. Refreshments available.
6. Follow your nose: tell your story
Illustrator and story-maker Sara Pitta will be leading a children’s story making workshop at Zealand Road Coffee Shop on Friday 5 December at 4.30pm (1hr). The workshop is called Follow Your Nose: Tell Your Story, and will inspire children to write a story based on delicious festive smells. Numbers are limited to 10. Please contact Rachael at Zealand Road Coffee Shop on 020 8880 6988 or email Zealand Road Coffee Shop to book a place.
7. Pizza making workshop
Following on from the hugely popular pizza making workshop held at Domino’s Pizza during the Roman Road Summer Festival, we’re bringing back not just one, but two, pizza making workshops during the Winter Festival. The first will be at 10am to 11.30am on Saturday 6 December and the second will be at 10am to 11.30am on Sunday 7 December. Just come along and drop in to Domino’s.
8. Paper Chain Gang
The Paper Chain Gang, led by the youth workers at Roman Road Adventure Playground, will be holding a Christmas decoration workshop at Mono Café on Sunday. Join the gang making giant paper chains to be donated to shops along Roman Road for their Christmas window displays. Drop-in anytime during Sunday 7 December between 11am and 4pm.
