Nothing beats exercising in the fresh air with friends. Here’s our round up of the best outdoor exercise classes around Roman Road.
One thing many people are looking forward to on March 29th is being able to take part in formally organised outdoor sports again. After a year of lock down, many of us are a bit fed up with living room workouts and desperate to experience the camaraderie and motivation offered by classes.
The evolution of the outdoor exercise class has leapt forward during the pandemic and over the last year we’ve seen our green spaces playing host to various types of fitness fun. Whether you’re a yoga buddy, a boxing fanatic or a frisbee enthusiast, there really is something for everyone. So dust off your rackets, sneakers, and yoga mats and get ready to bring your workout al fresco.
Join Adam on Saturdays for his weekend bootcamp, with lots of games, squats, sweat and a well deserved post-workout coffee. He uses powerlifting, Olympic weightlifting, gymnastics, yoga, high intensity interval training and boxing in order to help you feel stronger and lose body fat. There are also one-on-one sessions, as well as semi private classes available.

Tower Hamlets Tennis
We’re lucky to have several excellent courts around Roman Road, one in Victoria Park and one in Bethnal Green Gardens. These are run by Tower Hamlets Tennis who provide accessible tennis programmes to both adults and children. Young and older players can learn with equipment adapted to each age group, make new friends, and even take one-to-one classes with an LTA Accredited Coach.

1Rebel is a high intensity, dual studio fitness concept which normally offers no-contract classes aimed at subverting the traditional fitness model. Workouts with 1Rebel revolve around three concepts: Ride, which is their spinning concept, Rumble, namely their boxing concept, and Reshape, which includes running and weights. The good news is that even though their high tech studios in Central London won’t be accessible until late May, they’ll offer outdoor sessions as of the 29th of March in Victoria Park (and Clapham Common).

Our Parks Ltd was founded in 2014 by fitness coach Born Barikorto to deliver free, group exercise in parks and outdoor spaces available to everyone, bringing the local community together. The classes are led by fully qualified instructors, to parks near you in partnership with local authorities. Parkers (users) are invited to Our Parks events, including their annual Parks Off that see teams of Parkers taking part in a huge, family sports day. They also hold meet-ups and share as many opportunities as they can from their partners.

Yoga Body of Light
Angelika Grohmann brings you Yoga Body of Light, founded on the precision and vigour of Iyengar Yoga but emphasised more on breathing and the body’s natural flow of movement. Her sessions are all-inclusive, not just for fit, strong and flexible people. Participants should expect non-competitive, easygoing, spacious, meditative and accessible sessions. Angelika has practised and taught yoga for more than 35 years. She holds an Iyengar Yoga Teacher certificate and a Senior teacher certificate with Dona Holleman, a close student of BKS Iyengar.

Strong + Bendy
Strong + Bendy is a unique fitness studio and exercise garden in Hackney Wick, East London founded by twin sisters Faye (Mouse) and Rhi. Training aims to be accessible to a wide range of people, regardless of fitness level: Faye and Rhi believe no one should feel intimidated when walking into a fitness studio or gym. Participants should expect fun workouts, led by friendly teachers, in a beautifully unique environment. You’ll be surrounded by incredible murals by world famous street-artist @zabou on the walls of the exercise garden and studio.

Sessions involve a combination of boxing and kickboxing techniques matched with strength and conditioning exercises that together provide a total body workout every time.
