Fifty Two by Benjamin Kelly at Stour Space
Friday 5 April, 2019 @ 9:00 am - Friday 19 April, 2019 @ 5:00 pmFree
One year in the making, Fifty Two chronicles graphic artist Benjamin Kelly’s 52 week life drawing study and his journey from his first ever attempt at life drawing in February 2018. The exhibition explores the progress, trials and artistic journey that comes from one year of life drawing, and how the artist travelled through his own self-doubts.
The Hackney Wick Life Drawing community led Kelly to develop as an artist, allowing him to incorporate his graphic designer past into his body of work visibly by reducing the human form to bold, angular lines and minimalist abstraction. Kelly’s journey aims to highlight the importance of low-cost community arts classes as a creative and emotional outlet and support system.
Fifty Two is an exhibition in chronological order, and allows a play-by-play understanding of the development Kelly undertook as an artist through a year of life drawing.
Kelly is a Hackney Wick based artist from the north of England who works from life in pencil, charcoal and chalk, and then uses these figurative studies in his studio practice to produce graphic art. The exhibition is curated by Hannah Healey, art historian, and Ben Wakeling, Hackney Wick Life Drawing and Outsider Art founder, and will run for free at Stour Space until 19 April.
