Sarah Chapman, Matchgirl: Exhibition of Strike Leader
Friday 8 March, 2019 @ 9:00 am - Friday 26 April, 2019 @ 5:00 pmFree
To celebrate Women’s History Month, the Tower Hamlets Local History Library and Archives is holding an exhibition about Sarah Chapman, a lesser known strike leader and matchgirl.
Sarah Chapman, who lived in Mile End, was an integral part of the 1888 matchgirl strikes at the Bryant and May Factory. She was amongst those who met with Directors and campaigned for better working conditions. However she has gone largely unnoticed until now.
Now extended until the end of April, this exhibition is campaigning to secure a statue or memorial to all the matchgirls involved, and to save Sarah Chapman’s grave which, unmarked, is under threat of being molded over. If you would like to get involved, there is also a Save Sarah Chapman’s grave petition on Change.org which is aiming for 7,000 signatures.
The exhibition on the first floor landing will reveal the life and efforts of the political leader and Trade Union Congress delegate.
This event is part of the Women’s History Month programme at the Tower Hamlets Archives. A full programme and more information about the event can be found on the Idea store website
