Get a stall on the market
Roman Road Market is in the London Borough of Tower Hamlets and you’ll have to get a street trading licence from the Market Services department to be able to trade.
Tower Hamlets offer two types of street trading licences: temporary and permanent. You are able to apply for a temporary licence and trade on a casual basis until you qualify for a permanent licence. An offer of a permanent licence will be based on a priority point system. To determine the type of licence to apply for, you should contact the Market Service direct before making an application. For more information visit Tower Hamlet’s Street Trading Licence page.
Food stall regulations
To sell hot or ‘high risk’ food, there are a few more regulations you must meet including complying with relevant Food Safety Legislation, having a basic food hygiene certificate, and completing a Safer Food Better Business (SFBB) pack or equivalent (get one from Food Standards Agency on 0845 606 0667 or collect one from the Tower Hamlets Town Hall). You’ll have to be registered as a food operator by the council and your trailer or stall will have to have suitable wash hand facilities and a temperature probe to ensure correct temperatures are maintained for hot food. Check the Tower Hamlets website for more details.
Cost of a market stall
The application fee for both temporary and permanent licences currently costs £75 and then you’ll have to pay for a pitch which is currently £5 for Tuesday/Thursday and £25 for Saturday, though there are many special offers available for Roman Road Market stalls so it’s worth calling Market Services to get the best deal. Go to the Tower Hamlets website to see official and up-to-date pitch costs for Roman Road and other markets in Tower Hamlets.
