Selam L’Ethio presents Azmari Bet a night of Ethiopian music, poetry, and dance at Rich Mix on Friday 26 May.
The event aims to emulate the experience of hosting the Azmari poet-musicians in a traditional club called Azmari Bet. Azmari poet-musicians capture the cultural history of their communities in verse and song and actively participate in many aspects of Ethiopian life.
Azmari musicians prefer the one-stringed masinko fiddle, whose melodies can range from lively to haunting, or the five-stringed krar lyre as their instruments of choice. Musicians often create songs on the spot to praise or mock customers.
