Event description
As part of the New Creatives programme, artist Felix Taylor is joined in conversation by artist and writer Jamila Prowse to discuss the process of creating Taylor’s 2020 New Creatives audio commission a black mass – in instance no. 4 and the role of collaboration and friendship in both artists’ practice.
Building on Taylor’s ongoing research, the work comprises a series of recorded conversations conducted by the artist with his family and friends, alongside field recordings and ambient music. These samples are combined through a custom-built computer programme made by Taylor, titled a black mass, which uses algorithms to arrange audio fragments into a rich, multi-layered sonic tapestry. The resulting piece is a unique audio collage that invites the listener to meditate on love, joy, friendship and resilience in the Black diaspora. You can listen to work on BBC Sounds here.
Taylor’s audio commission will be shared online and via a limited run of cassette tapes launching 22 November 2021.
