Event description
The Museum of London Docklands presents Indo + Caribbean: The creation of a culture, on display until November 2023.
This free exhibition shines a light on the underrepresented Indo-Caribbean community and their presence in the UK today.
Indian indentured labourers were brought to the Caribbean almost 200 years ago to sustain plantations after the end of slavery. The Indo-Caribbean community soon became a distinct section of Caribbean culture and society. The esteemed writer VS Naipaul is from this community – his writing touches on his blended heritage and identity.
The display features a variety of objects, from jewellery to letters. Archival photographs and film also provide the viewer with the opportunity to learn about the nuances of colonialism, migration, and London’s Indo-Caribbean community.
