Event description
Young musicians are invited to book a place at Grand Union Orchestra’s 7th Annual Summer School aimed at adventurous young musicians aged 12-21yrs. Running from 26th – 29th July, it will be led by many of Grand Union Orchestra’s charismatic global music professionals and hosted this year, for the first time, in the heart of East London, at historic, refurbished and much loved Oxford House in Bethnal Green.
Grand Union Summer School is a chance for students to experiment and explore, learning to play by ear and improvise, discovering music traditions from across the world, beyond Western education models.
The Summer School is the culmination of a year-long, exceptional, youth programme for the long-running Grand Union Youth Orchestra and is open to all young curious musicians who would like to take part at a cost of £80 for four days of masterclasses.
Each Summer School student will have the opportunity to benefit from an intense and inspiring series of sessions led this year by Shanti Jayasinha (trumpet/cello) assisted by Grand Union Youth Orchestra director Josh Brandler (guitar/bass/drums).
Among those running classes are Claude Deppa (South Africa – trumpet/percussion), Louise Elliott (Australia – flute/tenor sax), Yousuf Ali Khan (Bangladesh – tabla/voice), Zhu Xiao Meng (China – gu zheng), Abass Dodoo (Ghana – African drums).
