Event description
This Saturday 3 June Rich Mix showcases Nazrul, an original musical play that commemorates the life and work of Kazi Nazrul Islam.
Kazi Nazrul Islam, widely regarded as one of the greatest in the esteemed Bengali canon, was a writer, poet, and musician. Nazrul fought poverty, illness, and prejudice, rising as one of the most powerful influencers of the pre-Independence South Asian subcontinent, only to lose his voice and mental capacity at the age of forty.
Piya Mayenin directs the play, which explores Nazrul’s work through the lens of his peers. Musical and literary stalwarts Tagore, Atul Prasad, Rajnikant, and DL Roy reminisce and narrate Nazrul’s story from the other side. This combines with performances that draw from his oeuvre, encompassing acting to dance.
The play features a wide variety of musicians exploring Hindustani, folk, and Islamic devotional music.
