Event description
This summer, Maureen Paley presents a new exhibition by the artist and sculptor Reverend Joyce McDonald.
McDonald’s work enshrines her own personal narrative, from a long battle with heroin and HIV diagnosis in 1985 to becoming an ordained minister at the Church of the Open Door in 2009. Her sculpture also refers to wider cultural experiences of family and love, as well as social and political issues.
The new exhibition memorialises events in McDonald’s own life as well as the world more broadly- recent sculptures are shown alongside those made in the 1990s. Seen together, the exhibition explores the pursuit of social justice and commemorates the lives lost to systemic racism and police violence.
