Event description
The Creativist is a retrospective exhibition celebrating the life and work of the artist Peter Gibson (1943 – 2021).
Displayed from 7 – 13th April at The Art Pavilion in Mile End Park, running alongside the exhibition is a programme of events including drawing and textile workshops, a film screening and a book launch.
Peter Gibson passed away in 2021 leaving a legacy of art, music, film and photography. This exhibition, events programme and new biography bring together for the first time the extraordinary range of his work and wider influence.
As front man for the UK Blues Band ‘Brett Marvin and the Thunderbolts’ he toured with Eric Clapton’s ‘Derek and the Dominoes’, made two classic film documentaries about Blues legend John Mayall and travelled throughout Europe with the ground-breaking Pip Simmons Theatre Group.
The visual art work in his retrospective includes more than twenty of his unique hand embroidered denim jackets, a collection of experimental mixed media constructions and an extensive portfolio of maritime photographs and oil pastels.
As an inspired teacher Peter Gibson also left an enduring legacy of people he influenced through his lifelong dedication to community education in East London and beyond.
