Event description
The Autumn Tour of The Women’s Centre
– Dates and Venues:
22.11.23, Oxford House | 6:45pm
The Play Is Not The Thing is a theatre company taking their play, The Women’s Centre on a local tour of community spaces this autumn.
After a sell-out run in spring, they hope wider audiences will continue to feel seen and uplifted by the play’s message.
The play is set at a fictional Women’s Centre in East London. It is a peek behind the curtain into the world of charity – in exploring the frictions and contradictions at play in the sector, it looks at who holds the power and asks questions about how it could be better distributed to benefit the whole system.
The production brings together a talented and diverse group of women from the community (not professional actors), and, most importantly, tells the unheard everyday realities of often overlooked women in our society. It’s an ode to sisterhood and the transformative power of community spaces grounded in warmth and humanity.
The Play Is Not The Thing believes in the therapeutic potential of art and that coming together as a collective to create can be an act of liberation. Their focus has always been on the process rather than the product. The clue is in our name: The Play is Not the Thing. The collective has been coming together as women to celebrate and empower one another through a process of creative workshops over 10 weeks.
