The Memorial Service to mark the 80th anniversary of the Bethnal Green tube shelter disaster takes place on Sunday 5th March at St. John on Bethnal Green Church at 2pm. The Service will last for about an hour and then everyone will parade across the road, along with Pearly Kings & Queens, survivors and relatives of the victims, to lay wreaths and flowers on the Memorial in Bethnal Green Gardens. Could you please make sure that if anyone is bringing wreaths or flowers they do not have any metal, wire or sharp parts to them as this damages the Memorial.
There will then be a brief blessing and a minute’s silence before everyone returns to the church for refreshments and a chance to catch up with those that were present in the disaster or their relatives. This will be the last Memorial Service that we will be organising after 16 years for various reasons, partly because most of the survivors are in their upper 80s or 90s. From next year there will just be a blessing at the Memorial itself on the actual anniversary (3rd March) each year.
We are producing a brochure for sale for £5 with background information, photos and memories of lots of those involved in the tragedy. Profits will be going to St. John’s Church in thanks for all their help over the last 16 years.
