Director of Globe Community Project Esther Cann explains how every penny and every pound donated to their cause this #GivingTuesday can be doubled, meaning your donation, no matter how big or small, can make twice the impact.
Giving Tuesday was created in 2012 as a simple idea: a day encouraging people to do good. Ten years later, it’s a global movement inspiring millions of people to give, collaborate and celebrate generosity. And it’s arrived in Bethnal Green!
At local charity Globe Community Project, we want to ensure that our local services for lonely older people, newly-arrived refugees and people suffering chronic pain can meet growing demand, but the costs keep rising.
So today on #GivingTuesday Globe Community Project joined with businesses around Roman Road to bring the Big Give to Tower Hamlets. You’ll be amazed at what we discovered…
Our challenge was to find local businesses willing to pledge £100 or more, to be eligible for the Big Give Christmas Challenge. The Big Give helps UK charities find match funding, meaning for 7 days from 12 noon on Tuesday 29th November, every donation we receive is DOUBLED! Can you donate today?
We hit the streets of Roman Road and beyond to find out who shares our vision of a Tower Hamlets where no-one is alone. Knocking on doors and making the ask was daunting, with many shops battling rising costs. But getting to know each business and the characters behind them was an incredible opportunity.
Mohammed Thalukdar of Klaus Estates was the first to jump in and pledge support. Immediately up for the conversation, he talked about giving, and ‘that feeling of satisfaction.’ Mohammed likes sharp suits and loves a latte at local caffeine den Quarantecinque.
Brothers Sam and Abu at Estateology were also quick to welcome us in. Why? They’re no strangers to charity. Having co-founded a charity to build Beani Bazar Cancer Hospital in Bangladesh, they had plenty of tips on how to raise money, and took the time to share them.
We loved connecting with FaceLace makeup art. Based locally at The Pill Box, the bespoke creations of founder Phyllis Cohen have been seen on the catwalk at London Fashion Week, as well as gracing the faces of Lady Gaga, Nicole Scherzinger and Kylie Minogue. Phyllis is “very proud” to pledge her support, adding that the work and dedication of Globe Community Project has really inspired her.
“It was clearly a worthwhile charity, and the people they support need our help through these challenging times,” said Martyn Stables, Director of Look Property. Like many of us, Martyn loves living and working in Roman Road, one of the most diverse and interesting areas in London, and is a regular Roman Road LDN reader. His favourite haunt? Zealand Road Coffee Shop, of course!
Will you join Mohammed, Phyllis, Martyn, Sam and Abu, as well as Gail Smith Flowers, search tech company Gresham, law firm Rook Irwin Sweeney and Fuckoffee to support those local people who need it the most?
Can you support the campaign today?
Donate any time from 12 noon Tuesday 29th November, until 12 noon Tuesday 6th December, and your donation will be DOUBLED by pledges, up to £4,200. Together, we could raise £8,400 for people who need your help right now more than ever.
One donation – twice the impact!
On behalf of Globe Community Project and all of our beneficiaries – Thank You.
