Nunnery Gallery is a free public gallery in east London with a local focus, championing the work of emerging artists and uncovering local history and heritage. Situated in a unique building on the ground floor of a former nineteenth-century convent, complete with gothic arches and the original tiled floor, the Nunnery Gallery is surrounded by over 100 of Bow Arts’ artist studios.
Presenting a diverse programme, exhibitions aim to appeal to a wide audience with a particular focus on site-responsive work and works that explore the history and themes of the local area. Events accompany all shows, including panels, workshops, and film screenings, creating debate and discussion around art in the community.
Nunnery Gallery is also a member of Own Art, enabling visitors to buy original artwork from artists or exhibitions over 10 affordable interest-free monthly instalments.
The onsite Nunnery Café offers table service, takeaway, and outdoor options suitable for any occasion and is fully accessible.
Serving AllPress coffee – roasted down the road in Dalston – the menu includes locally-made cakes and pastries as well as soup of the day, toasties, fresh breakfasts, and lots more homemade treats suitable for all dietary needs.
The Nunnery Café is also open for all evening events including First Thursday late openings, serving wine and locally brewed Five Points beer.
The onsite Nunnery Gallery Shop features a hand-picked selection of beautiful books, prints, pottery, cards, workshop vouchers, clothing and other unique products made by Bow Arts artists – the perfect spot to pick up locally made and unique gifts.
All proceeds of the café and shop support the Nunnery Gallery programme.
