Finding a good hairdresser can be an emotional roller-coaster, especially when we need to fit pampering time into our busy schedules. The perfect mix of good gossip, great cuts, colour and calm atmosphere that encourages you to turn off your phone and truly relax is like gold dust. Luckily for us, the East End is full of great salons and hair-magicians who don’t leave us in tears.
We asked you for your favourites and here are your recommendations. Whether you’re after a style overhaul, quick trim, or a soothing hair treatment, our roundup of hair salons around Roman Road should serve as a guide next time you wish to treat your tresses.
Reids, Roman Road
Established in 1982 with one barber and two stylists, the salon continues to be run by the same Panayiotou family. The place is contemporary and spacious, split over two levels, and incorporates both hairdressing and tanning. Reids goes with the flow with a stylish black exterior and skilled technicians who know what the newest trends are before your favourite magazine does. One of our readers, Craig Richards, has been going to Reids for almost 20 years. ‘It’s a great family run business that has been on the Roman since the late ’70s,’ he says.

Ossie’s, Roman Road
A firm community favourite. Ossie has had to move venue a few times to counter increases in rent, but we’re happy to say he’s still here. It’s a bonus too that Ossie uses the best quality products from Revlon Salon and Outback Organics Cosmetics, both of which are non-animal tested and designed for sensitive skin. You can also get your eyebrows threaded and tinted under the same roof as a part of their new service. #Browsonfleek

Idol Hair, Victoria Park Road
Another local gem, this cute little salon has plants peeking from every corner. The salon’s real unique selling point however has to be its vibe, with friendship at its core. Experienced stylists always make sure to discuss your new style to the smallest detail to provide personalised and professional treatment and to avoid disappointment. Many locals are already familiar with Idol Hair and the skilful hands of the staff have turned many bad hair days for the better. What customers love the most is the great community vibe. ‘Going in is like dropping in on a neighbour for an impromptu party,’ says reader Rachel Richardson.

Beauty Magic, Mile End Road
One of our readers’ favourite, Beauty Magic is a welcoming and professional salon in Mile End. Our reader Federica Pasquinelli loves getting her hair done by Andrea. ‘He always listen to my ideas, suggesting what would suits and he is always very clear and honest of the real result which never disappointed me!! He is always on time and extremely professional. Cut, trim, colour and blow are always on spot,’ she says. The waiting time at the salon is speedy, so if you’re in need of a quick fix this is definitely the place to go.

Tony’s, Roman Road
This unpretentious hair salon on Roman Road Market stretch specialises in unisex cuts and styling with perfect attention to detail. The friendly staff are a bonus, always ready for a chat while performing their hair voodoo. Our readers love the friendly prices and their ability to cater for anyone – meaning you can even take your little one for a haircut.

Hair.com, Bow Wharf
Tucked away in the industrial Bow Wharf estate, Hair.com occupies a naturally-lit ground floor salon with a contemporary feel. Apart from the usual cutting and colouring services, it is also the go to for gossip according to our reader Claire Davis, who has been getting pampered there by William for many years.

New Image, Old Ford Road
What this salon lacks in looks it makes up for with skills. The older East Enders get their hair done here weekly but the younger generation doesn’t half mind it either. You won’t find one bad review of New Image online, which means even the tech-savy customers take pride in promoting this small local business.

Hair 359, Roman Road
Hair 359 is the place that makes you want to book your next appointment before your blow-dry is finished. This low-key salon has a solid reputation with a big following. Right as you step in you will be greeted by lovely staff and seated in a comfy chair, at which point your designated stylist will talk to you through the process. Whether you’re after natural looking highlights or icy blonde curls, the technicians are ready to full-fill your most desirable dreams. We’ve heard especially good things about Danielle and her cuts, so make sure to ask for her next time you visit.

Creations, Roman Road
Situated on the bustling Roman Road, Creations boasts a quirky shopfront which lures visitors inside the tiny (and equally cute) interior. The brick walls and a glamorous chandelier is not what you would expect of such a modest place, but it all adds up to a warm neighbourhood vibe. Most of the decorations and furniture is up-cycled; the mirrors all come from old wardrobes and plants have been found abandoned on the street. Pop in for great cuts, colour, or a special Brazilian hair-dry which helps to protect hair from further damage.

Harber Hair, Roach Road
Situated in the up and coming neighbourhood of Fish Island, this cool salon really reflects the nature of its customers. With walls covered in ivy leaves snaking from the ceilings and a reception desk assembled from wooden pallets, this place couldn’t get more Insta-friendly. Well, perhaps if you add the three resident pups that nuzzle you while you’re waiting for a spot. As you would expect in this part of the city, apart from regular colour and cutting services, gents can also get their beards trimmed and shaved for less than £20.

Canary, Bethnal Green Road
After opening a successful salon in Fritzovia, Canary decided to fly east and nestle in Bethnal Green. The East London branch combines a cutting edge vegetarian cafe with a hair salon staffed by a well trained team of youthful and experienced hair technicians. Its location (tucked away in a back street opposite a pocket-sized park) makes it hard to spot unless you’re local, but it’s worth the effort to find. You can expect professional cuts and colouring as well as barber services at a reasonable price, plus an almond latte to go.

Diane James Hair & Make up, Roman Road
Diane James opened her boutique salon in Bethnal Green in 2004 with the aim to bridge the gap between East and West end hairdressers. The interiors are nothing short of dreamy, with oat-coloured leather chairs, flower wallpaper, and a brick wall in a similar shade. The salon uses top-notch products and they share great hairdo images on its Instagram too so you can grab some inspiration before coming in.
